Former MLA Julius Dorphang sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for rape

SHILLONG: Former Meghalaya legislator Julius Dorphang on Tuesday was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment for raping a minor. Dorphang was also asked to pay a fine of Rs. 15 lakh by a Special POCSO Court in Nongpoh.

Dorphang, former MLA of Mawhati and former chairman of the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), was convicted on August 13 under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for committing rape on a minor in December 15, 2016. The sentencing has been confirmed by his lawyer Kishore Ch. Gautam. Gautam said that they would be appealing against the sentence.

After committing the crime, Dorphang absconded as a case had been filed against him. A lookout notice was put out and he was arrested with the help of Assam Police from Guwahati on January 7, 2017.
