SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday laid the foundation for the Jorabat Combined Water Supply Scheme at Mawsmai village, Ri Bhoi District.

Among the dignitaries present at the foundation laying ceremony on Friday were MLA of Jirang Constituency, Sosthenes Sohtun and MDC of Jirang Constituency, Victor Ranee. The project is a multi village water supply scheme covering the four villages of Jorabat, Mawsmai, Ampher and Ampangiri. During his address, the Chief Minister said that the Jal Jeevan Mission was an important and ambitious project of the Government of India to provide functional household tap connections to all rural households and the implementation of schemes under the project was progressing well in the State. The Chief Minister informed that the State has been able to provide more than two lakh rural homes with FHTCs in the past year and a half through the Jal Jeevan Mission.

"I am confident that with dedicated officers and the department concerned working diligently, the State will be able to achieve the set target of close to 6 lakh FHTCs by December 2022," he said.

The Chief Minister added that the project would immensely aid in improving the lives of the people in the area and also free women and children from the drudgery of fetching water from long distances. During his address the Chief Minister also impressed upon the people to conserve the catchment areas and water sources in the villages to make the project sustainable.

Earlier during the day, the Chief Minister inaugurated the newly-constructed Guest House of the North Eastern Police Academy at Umsaw, Ri Bhoi District.
