SHILLONG: The foundation stone for setting up of an electric vehicle charging station (EVCS) was laid in Meghalaya on Friday. The EVCS, whose foundation stone was laid by the state-owned Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL), will be the first such station in the state.
As per reports, the first ever electric vehicle charging station will be set up at the PGCIL's office complex at Lapalang in Shillong and the work for the project has already been started by the PGCIL. The EVCS are being developed under Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid) and Electric Vehicles (FAME) India Scheme, Phase-II. PGCIL will develop 11 EVCS in Shillong under the scheme. Five of the 11 EVCS will be public, while the rest of the stations will be at government establishments.
Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) have been signed for four sites till now. These include the PGCIL office complex at Lapalang, MTC parking lot at Police Bazar, MTC ware house at Demthring and Polo parking lot at Polo. According to a statement from the ministry of power, PGCIL has made a name for itself as one of the market leaders in EVCS business. It has a good presence in major cities including Delhi, Bengaluru, Gurugram, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Kochi among others. At present, the power utility company has over 1.7 lakh ckm of transmission lines, over 260 sub stations and over 4.4 lakh MVA of transformation capacity. The company, with the adoption of latest technological tools and techniques, is able to maintain an average transmission system availability of over 99 per cent, the statement stated.
