SHILLONG: The Hynñiewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) has urged the State government to act immediately against the continuous 'intentional' land encroachment into Meghalaya by the Assam government.
The organization has also submitted a memorandum to the Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma to draw his attention regarding the 'continuous intentional encroachment' of land by the Assam government along the border.
In this connection, the HITO recently wrote a letter to the CM regarding the proposed construction of a University at Khanduli West Jaintia Hills. Recently some leaders from Assam had inspected Khatkasla Village in West Jaintia Hills where the new Border Police Outpost was set up by the Assam government.
It may be noted that a Status quo has been signed between Assam and Meghalaya with concern to the people residing along the border of both the States.
It is to be mentioned that in 2009 when the Meghalaya Progressive Alliance was in power, some people lost their lives at Langpih West Khasi Hills due to the interference of the Assam government while Himanta Biswa Sarma was a cabinet minister under the Congress government.
Reacting to the HITO letter on Khaduli, the Meghalaya Chief Minister stated that he will take up the matter with his Assam counterpart.
HITO president Donbok Dkhar said that it is also the duty and the responsibility of all the regional political parties in the State to raise the issue as all these parties had mentioned the border issue in their manifesto.
"If the Chief Minister of Meghalaya is unaware of the present situation at the border it proves that he accepted the encroachment and sooner or later we as a responsible organization will have to take up the matter with serious concern and forcefully evict the encroachers. We call on all the NGOs, Traditional Heads, the three ADCs to raise their voice of concern against the encroachment by Assam," he added.
