SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organization (HITO) Jaintia Hills has expressed their strong opposition against the proposed construction of a University by the Assam Government at Lum Siatmuid Khanduli West Jaintia Hills. In this regard, the organisation has also submitted a memorandum to Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday.

"We would like to bring to your (CM Conrad) knowledge that on the 31 May 2021 a group of people representatives from Assam under the instruction of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council Chief Executive Member Tuliram Ronghang accompanied by KACC MACs Rina Terangpi, Pawan Kumar, Headsing Rongphar VC HMB and others inspected the land at Lum Siatmuid Khanduli West Jaintia Hills for the proposed construction of a university by the Assam government without intimation to the Meghalaya government and the District Administration of West Jaiñtia Hills District," Wanbun N Dkhar leader of HITO Jaintia Hills said on Thursday.

He said it is a fact that the said land belongs to Meghalaya since the particular area where the proposed construction site was under the purview of the Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) jurisdiction and it was also a known fact that the JHADC in recent years had just auctioned the pine trees grown at the particular area which was planted and maintained by the Council itself.

"As far as the knowledge of the HITO is concern that the proposed construction university is an encroachment of land by the Assam government of not less than three kilometres from the actual border therefore we urge the government of Meghalaya through you to act on the matter at the earliest to avoid any unexpected incident and circumstances to happen soon," he said.
