IIM Shillong to hold key e-symposium on current status of Handloom sector

SHILLONG: An e-symposium is being organized on Monday to deliberate on the current status of the Handloom sector in the north-eastern region, and also arrive at specific interventions to fill the existing gaps through strengthening and capitalizing on the strengths of the rich tradition and heritage of handloom in the North East States. This e-symposium which is part of the series on 'Emergent Northeast India: Strategic and Developmental Imperatives', is being organized by the 'Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Centre for Policy Research & Analysis' under the aegis of IIM Shillong.

It may be mentioned that the Centre is progressively engaged in the policy-related work in development planning of six critical sectors in the North East States viz., logistics, tourism, horticulture, handicraft, handloom and business process outsourcing.

Union Minister of Textiles and Women & Child Development Smriti Zubin Irani will be gracing this e-symposium on July 20 as the Chief Guest. Among the other eminent personalities who will be present on the occasion will be Shishir Bajoria, the Chairman of BoG (Board of Governors), IIM Shillong; Dilip Barooah, founder MD of Fabric Plus; and Jahnabi Phookan, the national president of FICCI Ladies Organisation (FLO) and director of the JTI Group. A technical session on 'The Handloom Sector: Energizing the Potential Catalyst for Growth and Development' will be moderated by Atul Kulkarni, Member of BoG, IIM Shillong.
