Meghalaya: Implementing any new things we would need time; Principal of Sankardev College on CUET

Principal of Sankardev College, Dr. Eureka Lyngdoh has said that if the state had prepared itself for the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) ahead of its implementation two years ago Meghalaya would not have faced a situation it is on Saturday.

SHILLONG: Principal of Sankardev College, Dr. Eureka Lyngdoh has said that if the state had prepared itself for the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) ahead of its implementation two years ago Meghalaya would not have faced a situation it is on Saturday.

"We as principals of various colleges would like to say that implementing any new things we would need time," Lyngdoh said. She also stated that the principals of colleges had told that the National Testing Agency (NTA) to provide infrastructures well in regards to the CUET, whether it is digital facilities or any other needs.

Notably, Meghalaya has been granted exemption from Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for academic year 2024-25. This decision was confirmed through letter from Ministry of Education. It stated University Grants Commission (UGC) has agreed. They allow admissions to affiliated colleges of Central University in state. North Eastern Hill University (NEHU). As per existing practice.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma expressed gratitude to Union Minister of Education Dharmendra Pradhan. He thanked him for approving state’s request for exemption. "Government of India has exempted Meghalaya. This will greatly benefit our students." said Sangma. He also conveyed optimism. By next year most of state's colleges would be affiliated with state’s university rendering CUET unnecessary.


Exemption follows meeting between Voice of People Party (VPP) and State Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma. During meeting the issue was discussed. Exemption is seen as positive step. It supports academic aspirations of students in Meghalaya.
