SHILLONG: Opposition leader and former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has questioned the State government as to why residents of Tura between the age group of 18-44 years have to travel to other districts to get their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine on Monday?

"Many people from Tura who were suppose to get vaccinated had to travel to other districts to get vaccinated and this is not right," Dr. Mukul Sangma told The Sentinel.

He also questioned as to why the government was unable to provide sufficient vaccine in Tura, which prompted people to search for the vaccine in other parts of Garo hills.

"Because there was a shortage of vaccine, people had to go to other places like Williamnagar and Ampati to get vaccinated," he said.

Sangma further pointed out that in the recent notification issued by the district administration it has clearly mentioned that there are restriction on inter district movement, but due to the shortage of vaccine the people are compelled to go to other places with an objective to get vaccinated and protect themselves from the virus.

"The government should have examined first the number of people who have registered for getting the vaccine in Tura as there are more people there compared with Williamnagar and Ampati and this shows that the government is not serious with this issue and they are not prepared and they didn't do their homework," Sangma said.

He said that this shows that the government has no responsibility and are least bothered with the condition in the state concerning the virus and they didn't prepare properly on how to roll out the vaccination drive in a systematic manner.

"I'm not saying all of this just to point out the failure of the government but it's because there is a need for this government to rectify their mistake and take a new approach on handling the virus in our state as it is increasing each day," he said.

He siad if the people from Tura have to travel to Williamnagar and Ampati to get the vaccin, why can't an arrangement be made that a vehicle carry the vaccine to Tura.
