SHILLONG: The Khasi Students' Union (KSU) has expressed strong opposition to the allotment of seats to students belonging to non-indigenous communities, from the State quota at the College of Agriculture (CAU), Kyrdemkulai, in East Khasi Hills District of Meghalaya.

"What is more surprising is that despite the fact that the names of these students clearly indicated that they are non-tribals, yet they have been included in the Scheduled Caste category," said Raymond Kharjana who is chairman of the KSU's 'Education Cell'.

He pointed out that only four indigenous students got admission at the college from the State quota. "The allotment of seats is quite less for the indigenous students when compared to the people from the other communities," added Kharjana. "Against this backdrop, the KSU has decided to strongly oppose the decision of the State's Agriculture department and the CAU, which is seen as trampling against the rights of the indigenous students."

"At the same, we demand that the department must immediately remove the non-indigenous students from the State quota list," Kharjana said.
