Shillong: The East Khasi Hills district police made a major breakthrough by arresting six members of a notorious biker gang on June 30.

The biker gang, who was earlier involved in the June 24 attacks, carried out yet another assault at Jaiaw Umpohliew on June 30. However, they did not manage to escape this time around and were nabbed by the police soon after the assault took place.

The incident unravelled when four labourers hailing from Assam had gone to do some tile construction work in a house at Jaiaw on June 30.

The labourers were stopped by six youths on a bridge at Jaiaw Umpohliew at about 6:10 pm while they were returning back in a taxi driven by a local person.

Things took a drastic turn when the labourers including the taxi driver were physically assaulted by the youth and this attack caused severe injuries to four labourers after they were smashed by an iron rod.

As per the district SP, the VDP members intervened at the right time and managed to catch one of the culprits after a chase took place on the way to the Madan Heh area of Mawlai Phudmuri.

The police immediately rushed to the spot after receiving information from the locals and they took the injured labourers to Shillong Civil Hospital for treatment.

Thereafter, the police nabbed the remaining five culprits with the help of the locality members. It is to be noted that three of the six gang members happen to be juveniles.

In this regard, a case has been registered at Lumdiengjri police station under Sections 341, 326, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

"It is also ascertained that they are part of the bikers' gang involved in the assault on June 24," Nongtnger said.

He also went on to inform that another assailant who was involved in the attack at Mawlai on June 24 was arrested on the night of June 30, thereby pushing the number of accused arrested to eleven.

"The district police are on the job to arrest all those involved," Nongtnger added.
