SHILLONG: The permanent building of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly is likely to be completed by December 2021. This was stated by the Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh after he carried out an inspection of the ongoing work at Mawdiangdiang in the New Shillong township on Wednesday.

The Speaker was accompanied by the State Minister of Urban affairs Hamlet Dohling as well as officials from the Department of Planning and Finance. The construction work is being carried out by the Rajkiya Nirman Nigam Limited. Going by the feedback received from the company, the Speaker said that 80% of the work has been completed and the rest of the work is related to interiors.

"The works are pending as there is a shortage of highly-skilled workers due to the pandemic," stated Lyngdoh, adding that the company is trying hard to manage the situation."We will ensure that project gets completed by December 2021," stated the Speaker.

Earlier, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had said that the new Assembly building will be completed by March 2021. But the pandemic has taken a toll on the execution of its work. Notwitstanding the hurdle due to the COVID-19 situation, the Assembly secretariat is looking forward to have the 2022 Assembly session in its new building. Since the 2001 inferno that gutted the permanent Meghalaya State Assembly, the sessions have been held in temporary locations at the State Central Library and Cultural complex.
