Meghalaya CEO Uses Music to Spread Awareness About Elections

SHILLONG: Music plays a very key role in the life of the people of the northeastern states. So much so that the capital city, Shillong is popularly called the Rock Capital of the country by music enthusiasts over the globe. The election commission has decided to put this love for music into good use ahead of the Assembly polls in the state.

The Chief Electoral Officer of Meghalaya, Frederick Roy Kharkongor announced that his department is working towards the promotion of election awareness using music. He mentioned that the voting process of the upcoming assembly elections in the state of Meghalaya will be carried out in a single phase in February 27. A total of 2175000 voters will visit the 3482 polling stations spread across 12 districts of the state to cast their ballots.

"With just eight days to go for the poll day on February 27, the office of the CEO is actively leveraging music to urge voters to come to their nearest polling stations on voting day and to choose, cast and celebrate their franchise and to 'love your state, love your voice and love your vote', because 'your right is your might and your voice is your choice' “, mentioned the Chief Electoral Officer of the state in a statement.

"The 'Light After Dark', which is the state's first all visually-impaired music band and the state's 'disability icon', champions the cause of electoral participation amongst persons with disabilities (PWDs)," added in the release.

Popular band Summersalt and leading artists of the state have been declared the Election Icons. They performed in different parts of the Khasi Jaintia Hills and Garo Hills to urge the voter, especially the youth to go out and vote in large numbers.

The Chief Electoral Officer also mentioned that all possible steps are being taken towards enabling home voting for all the senior citizens aged more than 80 years in the state.
