Meghalaya: Chigitchakgre Village Declared as a Bee Village

SHILLONG: Working towards the promotion of the apiculture sector in the state, the Meghalaya Government has declared the Chigitchakgre Village as a Bee Village in the state. The chief minister made this announcement on Tuesday adding that the state will be looking at prospects of bee or honey-related tourism in the future.

The chief minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K Sangma made this announcement over the social media website X. He mentioned, “Keeping the sweet progress of the Apiculture Mission 2.0 alive, today we declared Chigitchakgre village under Gambegre C&RD block in West Garo Hills District as ‘Bee Village’. Will be sanctioning ₹10 Lakhs from the CM’s Special Development Fund (CMSDF) to the village to support apiarists in their endeavours to boost honey production. We will also handhold the village to ensure the quality of their bottled honey, market their products and also create other infrastructures to promote the Bee Village for Apitourism. ”

The Chigitchakgre village falls under the Gambegre C&RD block in the West Garo Hills of the state of Meghalaya. The chief minister addressed a public gathering in the Chigitchakgre Playground and announced that the village comes under the Agriculture Mission 2.0 programme and it will be given all assistance for increased production of honey.

Highlighting the other programmes including the CM Elevate and the YESS Meghalaya, he called on the youth of the state to make the best out of these schemes and help in the development of the state with such entrepreneurial and eco-friendly initiatives.

The Deputy Commissioner of the West Garo Hills District Jagdish Chelani participated in this event along with several other officials. It can be noted that apiculture or bee rearing is an age-old tradition in the hill states of Northeast India, especially Meghalaya and Nagaland.
