MAWSYNRAM: A heart-wrenching incident has come to light, shaking the educational scenario of Meghalaya. A class VI student at Mary Immaculate School, Kamarphil, in Dangar Village, was allegedly subjected to a demeaning act by his teacher for failing to speak in English during class.
According to reports, the young student was garlanded with shoes and slippers, an act of utter shame and humiliation. The incident has triggered widespread outrage and condemnation from the community. The matter came to the forefront after a concerned individual filed an FIR at the Dangar Police Outpost, shedding light on a series of inhuman acts committed against the students of the school. The FIR, lodged by Sumitra D. Sangma, the mother of the humiliated student, detailed shocking instances of cruelty perpetuated by the head teacher and some staff members. In addition to the garlanding incident, the FIR exposed several other inhumane punishments inflicted on students, including licking unclean dustbins, beating the students black and blue, cutting their hair forcefully, and personal insults, amongst other degrading acts.
The situation has escalated to a point where many students have been compelled to abandon their education midway, leading to a significant increase in dropouts. This appalling treatment not only jeopardizes the well-being and emotional health of the students but also tarnishes the reputation of the education system in the region. Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma, upon learning about the shocking incident, expressed his dismay and deemed it unfortunate. He assured that the matter will be thoroughly investigated once the reports from the District Magistrate are received. The Minister firmly stated that teachers should never engage in such cruel activities and emphasized the need to draw clear boundaries when it comes to disciplining students.
In the FIR, serious concerns were raised about the qualifications and training of most teachers in the school, with some alleged to be only substitute teachers. The lack of qualified educators and proper training exacerbates the challenges faced by the students and the overall quality of education imparted in the school.
Parents of the affected students have expressed strong disapproval and condemnation of the ill-treatment faced by their children. A viral video captures their anger and demands for swift and decisive action against the teacher and the school administration responsible for perpetrating such acts of cruelty. The incident has ignited a larger debate about the need for comprehensive reforms in the education system, with a focus on qualified and compassionate educators who prioritize the well-being and growth of their students. As the authorities launch a thorough investigation into the matter, the people of Meghalaya stand united in seeking justice for the victim and demanding an end to such inhumane practices in schools.
