SHILLONG: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday kickstarted his campaign tour for the election to the GHADC (Garo Hills Autonomous District Council) slated on April 12. He bgan his campaign from from Adokgre in North Garo Hills.
Incidentally, the NPP (National People's Party) always launches its election campaigns from Adokgre which was rechristened as 'Chenanggre' or 'Land of Victory' by (late) P.A. Sangma.
NPP candidate from Kharkutta, Edbirth D Shira highlighted the development initiatives undertaken by the party under the leadership of the Chief Minister, and appealed to the electorates to vote for the party.
Lashing out at the Congress for appointing more than the required staffs in the GHADC, Edbirth alleged that the move led to the present financial mess in the Council. The excess appointments were made during the term of Alphonse Sangma as the CEM (Chief Executive Member) of GHADC during the Congress regime, he added.
Urging the masses to ensure that the NPP wins with a thumping majority, Shira said that such a decision by the electorates will help the NPP to overhaul the Council and also create a better working atmosphere there.
NPP candidate Shira also alleged that the Congress has misled the masses on CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) adding that the party's lies on the Act have created confusion among the people. He further assured the people that nobody will have to give their land to outsiders.
He further said, ''The Congress party is fully aware that they can't be in power either in the Centre or the State. So, they are only trying to create fear and confusion among the common people.''
Addressing the election rally at Adokgre to drum up support for the party's candidate from Kharkutta, the Chief Minister reminded the gathering about the commitment the NPP has for the people of the State. Stating that (late) P.A. Sangma had a vision for the people of Garo Hills and Meghalaya, he pointed out that the NPP is working to fulfil his dreams. The NPP has made various attempts to reform the district councils and will continue to do so, the Chief Minister also said that GHADC is in a mess as Congress party failed to make the necessary reforms. Adding that the NPP is truly committed for the people, he said that the party is working to bring about the much-needed development in the State. Urging the people to vote for the NPP, the Chief Minister also said that NPP has supported the Council by paying advance royalty to it.
The NPP wants to resolve the issues of council and ensure that it is empowered and functions of its own, he said, and added that the NPP is structuring the Council with various technological intervention to ensure that their is financial stability in the Council.
