Meghalaya Commission of Women Denotified

SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Commission for Women was denotified by the authorities after the alleged involvement of the chairperson in promotional activities for a candidate in the Meghalaya Assembly Polls.

The election authorities of the state had alleged the participation of the chairperson Phidalia Toi in an election rally for the candidate of the National People’s Party in the Jowai Assembly Constituency in the state of Meghalaya.

The chairman had however refuted the allegation about any such involvement, she mentioned her receipt of the notification from the state government on Tuesday evening which mentions the denotification on the 18th of last month.

Refuting the allegations against her, Phidalia Toi mentioned, “there was no political rally. I had accompanied Shylla, who is my cousin’s son to the DC office when he had gone to file his nomination on February 7. I did not even enter the DC office,”

The nine-member Commission for Women was selected for a term of three years and this notification affects all the members. The District Election Officer of the West Jaintia Hills district had earlier served a show cause notice to the chairperson of the commission.

According to a previous report, the show cause notice mentioned “alleges you had participated in a rally taken out by the National People’s Party candidate, Shri Wailadmiki Shylla and was seen walking hand in hand with the said candidate during the rally in the streets of Jowai”.

This reported action was against a rule of the state services conduct rules to maintain “are prejudicial to the neutrality expected of a government employee”. Following which, she was allowed two days to respond against the alleged violation of the code of conduct of the state services.

Representatives of the congress party had also demanded her removal and the disqualification of the candidate Wailadmiki Shylla from participating in the upcoming polls.
