SHILLONG: President of Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee Dr. Celestine Lyngdoh led the party to pay homage to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 35th death anniversary here on Thursday. The day observed as Martyrdom Day and the National Integration Day witnessed an impressive function held in Congress Bhawan. The programme started with the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ and the ceremonial lighting of the candle. Floral tributes were paid to the portrait of Gandhi and the “National Integration Pledge” was administered by the PCC president. In his address, Dr Lyngdoh spoke of the enormous contributions Indira Gandhi in protecting the sovereignty and integrity of the nation.
James S Lyngdoh, MPCC working president, while paying his tribute to Indira Gandhi, reminded that it was she who had granted Statehood for Meghalaya and that her birth and death anniversaries be observed in a special way in Meghalaya. Others who spoke included Joplin Scott Shylla, president, Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress, Fernandez Savio Dkhar, general secretary, Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress and SL Singhania, senior Congressman.
