SHILLONG: The death of an accident victim in the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences resulted in a tense condition on Sunday. The hospital authorities reportedly had to call in the police to bring the situation under control.

According to the sources, a youth identified as Suraj Prasad Gupta was brought to the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) after he met with an accident at Umiam on Sunday. The two-wheeler he was on reportedly encountered an accident with another vehicle. The victim succumbed to his injuries a few hours later and people blamed the lack of doctors because of the weekend for the same.

The friends and family members alleged that there was a lack of doctors on duty at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences at that time, leading to the patient not getting the proper medical attention at the time of need. They mentioned that the patient did not receive treatment for hours after he was brought into the hospital.

Personnel from the police later came and took control of the situation and prevented the situation from becoming worse.

Meanwhile, the officials from the hospital mentioned that the accident took place at around 11 AM and the patient reached the hospital at around 12:20. They mentioned that the medical staff had followed all necessary protocols to stabilise the patient, but he succumbed to his injuries at 2:30 PM. They also mentioned the patient had collapsed when they were trying to diagnose the extent of the injury. They added that an autopsy will be carried out. While the kin of the victim mentioned that there was no senior doctor available at the time, the hospital authorities said that there were several doctors available apart from the specialists on call.
