SHILLONG: Members of the Meghalaya EMRI Workers’ Union (MEMRIWU) broke down in tears after meeting Meghalaya Health Minister AL Hek at his office chamber on Friday.
The members of the union including its president broke down after the meeting did not end on a positive note. Many of the union members are carrying out an indefinite hunger strike in the city.
President of the union, Roipar Kharraswai when asked by reporters on the condition of the members who have been on an indefinite hunger strike for the past four days, said that till date, eight of its members have already been admitted in hospital and the remaining union members are in a critical state.
It may mention that the employees of GVK EMRI under the banner of the union are demanding increase in their salary, maintenance of the ambulance beside others.
“We want the government to intervene and take appropriate action in this matter as many of our colleagues are suffering and we want things to be normalized,” Kharraswai said while speaking to reporters.
He also said that there is a need for the government to call a meeting which will include members of the union, management of GVK and officials from the State Government.
When asked, he said the minister has not given an assurance on the matter, hence the meeting was not that fruitful.
The delegation of union members was also accompanied by leaders of both the Federation of Khasi Jaintia People (FKJGP) and the Khasi Student Union (KSU) central body.
The NGOs have also urged the State Government to take up the matter seriously.
