Meghalaya Farmers’ Parliament Begins on Meghalaya Farmer’s Day

SHILLONG: The third session of the two-day Meghalaya Farmers' Parliament is starting concurrently with the commemoration of Meghalaya Farmers' Day at the esteemed State Convention Centre here.

The annual celebration of the tireless efforts and priceless contributions of local farmers to the agricultural landscape is organized by the Department of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare in partnership with the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency (MBDA) and Hills Farmers’ Union (HFU).

The 3rd Meghalaya Farmers' Parliament is set to take place and prominent attendees include Minister of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Ampareen Lyngdoh, Minister of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Alexander L. Hek, and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, who will be the chief guest. On December 4, 2018, the Meghalaya Agriculture Department, the Government of Meghalaya, the Meghalaya Basin Development Agency (MBDA), the Meghalaya Institute of Entrepreneurship (MIE), and the Hills Farmers' Union (HFU) collaborated to hold the first Farmers' Parliament in Shillong.

The second Farmers' Parliament was held in Tura on December 10, 2019, after the first edition proved to be successful. The purpose of the event was to declare 2020 as the “Year of the Farmers” and to celebrate Meghalaya Farmers’ Day on December 4. The Farmers' Day celebration and the Meghalaya Farmers' Parliament provide an important forum for unity by honouring those who work nonstop to guarantee the region's prosperity and food security.

The program emphasizes the value of neighborhood-based projects and grassroots involvement. Renowned policymakers and agricultural experts will take part in the discussion, providing insightful commentary to address the changing needs of the farming community.

The program will include panel discussions, product showcases, and networking opportunities to give attendees the tools they need to succeed in their agricultural endeavours. The Meghalaya Farmers' Parliament is unwavering in its dedication to advancing sustainable agriculture, maintaining customary farming practices, and welcoming cutting-edge solutions to deal with the agricultural industry's constantly shifting terrain.
