SHILLONG: Four children are said to have died in a massive landslide in the Laitlarem village of the East Khasi Hills in Meghalaya as the area continues to experience heavy rainfall. According to reports, the event also left two other people with serious injuries.
The government provided Rs 4 lakh as compensation for the deceased's nearest of kin following the terrible tragedy.
A review meeting was also conducted by Sangma to evaluate the situation in the state's Garo Hills region, which was recently affected by landslides and flooding.
The Chief Minister's decision has been informed of the various relief measures being implemented in their respective jurisdictions by the officials present at the meeting, who have also informed them that most situations are returning to normal as a result of the flood levels receding.
In all three districts, the officials reported damage to homes, property, and road infrastructure. The effects on agriculture and farming operations have been severe.
Another landslide was recorded at Sunapur Tunnel earlier in the morning, shutting National Highway 06 in Meghalaya and entirely halting traffic flow.
Since the road is blocked by the debris, traffic has been rerouted via other roads. Due to the continuous rains, travellers on the road have been urged to move cautiously as there is a possibility of additional mudslides and landslides.
The National Highway Authority of India has been asked to assist the East Jaintia Hills administration in Meghalaya in removing the debris that has accumulated as a result of the recent landslip so that traffic flow is not impeded.
Due to the landslip that occurred over the past two to three days as a result of the constant rains, the Sonapur tunnel on National Highway 6, which provides a lifeline to the neighbouring states of Assam, Mizoram, and Tripura, has been sealed.
