TURA: The officers of multiple departments met with West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Jagdish Chelani on Tuesday to discuss matters related to the upcoming 5th Edition of the Meghalaya Games, which is tentatively scheduled to take place in Tura from January 15 to January 21.
As the person in charge of organizing the preparations, Jagdish Chelani listed the responsibilities of the officers and asked for their cooperation to ensure that the games ran smoothly. Since this would be the first time such an event had been held in Tura, there was a lot on everyone's plate to demonstrate and prove their abilities.
Regarding the town's aesthetic appeal, Chellani said that different locality development committees are working to maintain the cleanliness and aesthetic appeal of their own communities and that each community will receive a token sum of money in support of these efforts. He also said that the Tura town's aesthetic appeal is a component of the overall game.
He also mentioned the possible venues of some of the sporting deciplines. These include Monfort School, Danakgre (Archery), Track and Field, Dakopgre (Athletics), Tura Inddor Hall, Hawakhana (Badminton), Rongkhon Sports Complex (Basketball), Don Bosco School (Boxing), Rongkhon area (Cycling), P A Sangma Stadium and Chandmari Football Ground (Football Men and Women respectively), BSF Ground (Golf), 2nd Battalion Goeragre (Shooting), P A Sangma Stadium (Sports Climbing) and Rongkhon Swimming Pool (Sports Climbing).
Meanwhile, the state of Assam has already started a similar initiative under the name Khel Maharan from the beginning of November 2023 till January 2024. Like other parts of the State, the inaugural session of Khel Maharan was held at Samar Dalani. The sports event of Dakhin Nagsankar GP under Sootea Development Block has been organized at the playground of Dakhin Nagsankar High School, Samar Dalani. The inaugural session began with the hoisting of the flag by Parbati Sarma, chairman of Dakhin Nagsankar GP level Khel Maharan committee followed by the illumination of earthen lamp by Ballav Chapagain, headmaster of Dakhin Nagsankar HS. Hitesh Barua, ZPC member inaugurated the sports event. Two senior sports persons of the greater South Nagsankar area Homnath Dhakal and Khagen Bhuyan were felicitated by the organizers. The two veteran sportspersons also illuminated Olympic Torches. Baneswar Bora, local sports organizer and sportsman was felicitated by the Khel Maharan committee. All the proceedings of the inaugural session were conducted by Anjan Baskota, member secretary of the Khel Maharan committee. The event was attended by registered players, teachers, dignitaries and the general public.
