Meghalaya: Lightening Claims Life of a School Student

Although the local people tried to revive him, he was ultimately pronounced dead at the location of the incident.

SHILLONG: In a sad development, a school student lost his life after being struck by lightning. The incident took place in the South West Khasi Hills District of the state on Friday.

According to local sources, the victim, a 16-year-old boy named Alborlang Marwein was on his way home from school when the incident took place. A sudden heavy downpour took play while he was on his way home, forcing the victim to take shelter under a tree on the side of the road, which was suddenly struck by lightning.

Although the local people tried to revive him, he was ultimately pronounced dead at the location of the incident.

Alborlang Marwein was a student of the Mawten Senior Secondary School. The incident took place in the Mawten region of the South West Khasi Hills District and he was a resident of the Wahslej locality.

Previously two persons were killed and three others injured when lightning struck them at Charbatapara village, near Phulbari in West Garo Hills. Local MLA SG Esmatur Mominin had apprised Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma and has sought financial aid to be released to the families of the deceased. He has also apprised the Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills seeking immediate aid for the bereaved families. Mominin is personally monitoring the well-being of the injured and has made all necessary arrangements for their treatment at a local hospital in the neighbouring Goalpara district of Assam.

A few months back a similar incident led to the death of one person in Assam. With persistent rain and thunderstorms reported in several areas of Assam, where one person was killed as a result of a lightning strike in the Karimganj district, the northeast has been suffering from unfavourable weather conditions. Priyo Ranjan Das has been identified as the deceased. According to sources, the incident was reported in the Ratabari constituency of the Karimganj district. It should be noted that the Indian Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert over parts of the northeast due to the region's recent heavy rains.
