SHILLONG: According to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, the MDA Government faced its biggest "Agnipariksha" during the Assembly elections and passed with flying colors. However, the opposition bench had requested an Assembly resolution asking the Center to take cognizance of the irregularities and corruption and investigate the same.

In response to a brief discussion on the criticism that Meghalaya was the nation's most corrupt state, made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the CM stated that the 2023 elections would be a litmus test for his administration and that public support for the various MDA components would be the best indicator of the government's success.

He said that now that the elections were over and the results were in, it was time for everyone to come together and work as a team to fulfill the ambitions of the people.

In response to the Union Home Minister's remark, Sangma stated that although many statements are made and traded during elections, the fact that the Prime Minister and the Home Minister traveled to the state to witness MDA 2.0's swearing-in ceremony says a lot about their support for this administration.

The CM extolled the virtues of the MDA Government's accomplishments during the previous five years, declaring that "Meghalaya is one of the best performing states when it comes to implementation of major programs of the federal government, such as the Jal Jeevan Mission and others."

He also mentioned that important projects like Phase I of the Shillong IT Park, five-star hotels like the Courtyard by Marriott and Vivanta Meghalaya, and the Shillong International Centre for Performing Arts and Culture (SICPAC) have also been completed. The government has also established a public service delivery commission to reduce corruption.

Adelbert Nongrum, the VPP's North Shillong MLA, brought up the topic of corruption earlier and drew attention to the Home Minister's accusation made while campaigning.

Nongrum stated, "Charges of corruption leveled by none other than the Prime Minister and the Home Minister have brought shame to Meghalaya," and he urged the government to respond appropriately by filing a defamation case against both of them if the allegations were untrue in order to protect the state's reputation.

Mukul Sangma, the head of the TMC, who participated in the conversation, stated that the MDA government must undergo an "Agnipariksha" in order to clear itself of any allegations of corruption.

He urged the House to adopt a resolution urging the government to identify instances where such allegations have been made and, if such allegations are present, the Union government should investigate all of them.
