MEGHALAYA: Meghalaya is set to create a historic milestone as the state cabinet officially signalled to the much-awaited state anthem, marking 52 years of statehood the sign of the cross. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, in a press conference after the Cabinet meeting, happily announced the approval of the official anthem at the Meghalaya Day celebrations in Tura on Sunday and unveiled plans for a wider unveiling.
Expressing his delight, Chief Minister Sangma said, "I am elated to announce that the official anthem of Meghalaya has been approved by the Cabinet. I thank the Department of Arts and Culture and every person involved in its creation. I will dedicate the nation."
Highlighting the importance of this milestone, Sangma stated, "This is indeed a moment of pride and joy. The country has not had a song for the last 52 years." Apart from the release of the song, the Cabinet took important decisions, including approving the Meghalaya Contingency Fund (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024, which temporarily increased the fund from Rs 500 crore to Rs 1,000 crore Chief Minister Sangma explained that the reforms were in response to the addition of central resources .
Explaining the rationale behind the temporary move, Sangma stressed, "The new funds are expected to support development schemes. However, due to the constraints in the existing budget, changes." is needed to make the best use of the money coming in."
It has also been disclosed by the Chief Minister that the Cabinet has given approval for the recipients of the Meghalaya Day Awards and the names will be announced during the Meghalaya Day celebrations tomorrow. At the same time, the cabinet endorsed the list of esteemed dignitaries (VIPs) participating in the grand Republic Day celebrations in the state of Meghalaya and finalized the designated venues for the events.
