SHILLONG: In response to distressing reports of prolonged non-payment of salaries and the tragic death of a contractual worker, the Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has initiated a suo-motu investigation. MHRC Secretary Federick M Dopth announced on Monday that the commission, led by Chairperson Justice T Vaiphel (Retd), has issued a notice to Meghalaya Chief Secretary DP Wahlang, urging an inquiry into the situation. The Chief Secretary is tasked with submitting a comprehensive report to the rights panel within 15 days.

The MHRC's intervention stems from local media coverage highlighting the plight of six contractual employees in Meghalaya's South Garo Hills District. These workers have reportedly gone without salaries for an alarming period ranging from two to three years. Tragically, one of the employees recently passed away, still owed over 20 months' worth of wages.

MHRC Secretary Dopth underscored that the Commission's decision to take suo-motu cognizance was prompted by the alarming nature of the reports. The media coverage shed light on the dire financial situation faced by the transport department's contractual employees, painting a disturbing picture of delayed payments and the severe consequences that ensued.

Sources from the transport department reveal that some employees are grappling with outstanding dues extending beyond an astonishing 36 months. The situation has raised concerns about the financial hardships faced by these workers and the potential implications for their well-being.

In response to the crisis, MHRC has called upon the Chief Secretary to delve into the matter comprehensively, investigating the reasons behind the prolonged salary delays and the tragic circumstances leading to the death of one worker. The Commission aims to ensure accountability and justice for the affected contractual employees.

As the inquiry unfolds, the Meghalaya community anxiously awaits the Chief Secretary's findings and hopes for swift and decisive action to rectify the injustices faced by the transport department's contractual workers.
