Meghalaya: Over 4 Lakh Tap Water Connections Achieved under JJM

The highest level of tap water connectivity is 80.09% in the East Garo Hills and the lowest of 44.50% in the East Jaintia Hills.

SHILLONG: The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) initiative was launched by the Indian government in August 2019. And in the state of Meghalaya, the project has reached a remarkable milestone with over 400,000 functional household tap connections in the state.

This is a remarkable increase from 4550 Functional Household Tap Connections on 15 August 2019 to 4,00,812 connections on Thursday. It also signifies a major leap toward ensuring access to safe and sustainable drinking water for rural households in the region, mentioned the concerned authorities.

Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K Sangma, officially announced this achievement and congratulated the team of Jal Jeevan Mission, Meghalaya. He said, "Meghalaya crosses a remarkable 4 lakhs Jal Jeevan Mission Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTCs). We Congratulate and render our best wishes to the Jal Jeevan Mission Meghalaya team, as we continue to pursue our target of 100% FHTCs in our state."

The chief minister also mentioned that the different districts of the state have different levels of completion of the project with the highest of 80.09% in the East Garo Hills and the lowest of 44.50% in the East Jaintia Hills. As for the other districts of the state, the South West Garo Hills stands at 79.02%, Ri Bhoi at 72.83%, North Garo Hills at 69.35%, Eastern West Khasi Hills at 67.56%, South Garo Hills at 65.56%, South West Khasi Hills at 65.15%, West Garo Hills at 59.82%, West Khasi Hills at 57.52% and West Jaintia Hills at 50.29% completion of the project.

Meghalaya was honoured with the second prize in the functionality assessment of the Jal Jeevan Mission in October 2022, showing the commitment of the state administration towards the goals of the JJM to provide potable drinking water to every household, especially in the rural regions of the state.
