Meghalaya PCC organizes Kissan Sammelan over farm Bills 2020

Following the directives of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), the Meghalaya PCC organized 'Kisan Sammelan' (State-level farmers' meet) at the Congress Bhawan here from 11 am on Saturday.

SHILLONG: Following the directives of the All India Congress Committee (AICC), the Meghalaya PCC organized 'Kisan Sammelan' (State-level farmers' meet) at the Congress Bhawan here from 11 am on Saturday.

The farmers' meet was held to express resentment at the three "Anti-Farmers' Bill passed by the BJP Government at the Centre in both Houses of the Parliament recently and also to express solidarity with the farmers community of the party, who are directly hit by the legislations," stated a release.

CLP Leader and Leader of Opposition in Meghalaya and former Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma was also present at the session chaired by MPCC working president James S. Lyngdoh, who also thanked the office bearers, MLAs, MDCs, Ex-MLAs, DCCs and members of BCC and frontal organisations for extending their support to the meet.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Mukul Sangma, observed, "Agriculture in our way of life and it has become culture and tradition. Most of us are directly or indirectly connected to farming either were farmers or consumer".

He expressed his sadness over the fact that even in usual circumstance farmers are always hit by natural calamities. Apart from that, if the farmers are forced to opt out of "Farming", then hunger and starvation would become a common feature in the society.

Among other who addressed the gathering were the president of West Khasi Hills DCC Bormanding Nonglang, president of Nongpoh BCC Plielad Tiewsoh, MDCs Andrew Shullai, RV Lyngdoh and Lamphrang Blah, president of MPYC Richard M. Marak, as well as MLAs George B. Lyngdoh and Dr M Ampareen Lyngdoh. MDC and secretary of MPCC Charles Marngar proposed the vote of thanks, the release added.
