SHILLONG: The MPYC (Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress) has sharply criticised the Central government's reported move over DDK (Doordarshan Kendra) in Tura. In this regard, a delegation of the MPYC led by its State president Richard M Marak had a discussion with the Station Director of DDK in Tura. As stated by the MPYC in a press release, the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has decided "to strip down DDK, Tura from a full-fledged transmitting station to a mere programme-production centre".

The MPYC president stated in the release, "This landmark institution in the Garo Hills and has been giving exemplary service to the region since its establishment. The erstwhile Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had established this institution. So now, before taking this move, the Centre should understand that though we are in the same State, the Garo Hills is a separate entity altogether with different language, culture, etc.

"With the shifting of this transmission centre, we will be losing not just an institution, we will be losing representation, not only of the Garos but also of all the other under-represented tribes indigenous to the region. We will also be losing the opportunities that the diverse talents of this region got to showcase through this platform. The people of Garo Hills will also be losing out on the job opportunities if the institution is shifted from here.
