Shillong: On Monday, the state of Meghalaya remembered its first Chief Minister Captain Williamson Sangma on his 31st death anniversary.
The current Chief Minister of Meghalaya Conrad Sangma remembered and honoured the former Meghalaya CM on Twitter. His tweet read, "Today marks the 31st death anniversary of Captain Williamson A Sangma, Meghalaya's founder Chief Minister and the pioneer who fronted the Hill State Movement. We honour his indelible contributions to our State & its people."
Captain Williamson Sangma was born on October 18 in the year 1919 and was a resident of Baghmara in the district of South Garo Hills in Meghalaya.
He also served as the Governor of Meghalaya in the year 1989.
He represented Baghmara Assembly Constituency and merged his political party with the Congress (I) party.
He also served in the military and joined politics in the year 1952. He later served as that Chief Executive Member of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC).
