Meghalaya Reviews Covid Preparedness, Asks for More Vaccines

SHILLONG: In view of the rising number of Covid cases across the country, the government of Meghalaya has requested additional lots Covid-19 vaccines from the Central Government.

The Northeast Indian state of Meghalaya was one of the worst affected during the Covid pandemic last year. Mainly because of the limited number of medical facilities in the state, and because of the lack of proper knowledge, especially in the rural regions of the state, a large number of people had died in the previous surges.

Keeping these issues in mind, the State Health Department conducted a review meeting of the healthcare facilities. A mock drill was also conducted recently among the health facilities of the state to ensure that everyone related to the healthcare sector are prepared to handle another posible outbreak of the illness. The state government has also requested the central government to complete all the Covid related projects that are now ongoing as soon as possible.

The Health Minister of Meghalaya, Ampareen Lyngdoh had mentioned that the government is upgrading several medical facilities of the state with the Covid funds received in the previous financial year. She also mentioned organising health empowerment committees at the village level to ensure that information can reach the grassroots.

The Health Minister had also mentioned that the state has appointed more healthcare workers in the recent time under the funding for Covid under the National Health Mission to ensure that the facility reaches more and more citizens.

The minister also advised the public to follow wear masks and follow all other Covid protocols in order to prevent any more outbreaks.

Recently a mock drill was conducted across nearly 1300 health facilities distributed across the state of Assam to test the Covid preparedness of the health department. Officials of the National Health Mission of Assam mentioned that this mock drill was organised on Monday. Since the number of Covid cases has been seen to be increasing in the last few days and setting new records, the health department is taking preemptive measures to handle any surge of infections in Assam. As a part of this endeavour, a total of 25 district hospitals, 11 government medical college hospitals, 223 community health centres and sub-divisional hospitals have been bought under the mock drills. A huge number of primary health centres also took part in this drill.
