SHILLONG: Meghalaya Assembly Speaker, Metbah Lyngdoh on Thursday recognized the merger of 12 Congress MLAs with the Trinamool Congress. In the order, the Speaker said that the merger of the 12 legislators has been recognized as provided under paragraph 4 of the Tenth Schedule to the Constitution of India with effect from November 24, 2021.

Lyngdoh in the order stated that after examining in detail all the 12 petitions filed by the petitioner, Dr. M. Ampareen Lyngdoh, MLA and Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader and the comments received from all the 12 respondents, he was satisfied that the merger is valid as provided under paragraph 4 of the Tenth Schedule to the Constitution of India, and does not attract disqualification.

"I do not find any merit in the submissions made in the petitions filed by Dr. M. Ampareen Lyngdoh, MLA, and therefore, the same is hereby dismissed," the Meghalaya Assembly Speaker stated.

The Congress initially on November 29 filed the first petition against 10 MLAs who had crossed over challenging the merger with the TMC. Later on December 10, the second petition was filed against Charles Pyngrope and Shitlang Pale.

The 12 Congress MLAs who defected to the TMC are Dr. Mukul Sangma, Marthon Sangma, Jimmy D. Sangma, Lazarus M. Sangma, Miani D. Shira, H.M. Shangpliang, George B. Lyngdoh, Winnerson D. Sangma, Dikkanchi D. Shira, Zenith M. Sangma, Charles Pyngrope, and Shitlang Pale.
