SHILLONG: A high level review meeting was organized in the state capital to oversee the causes and problems that lead to violence during a rally last Friday.
The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) had organized a rally on Friday through the streets of Shillong protesting against the unemployment problem rampant in the state. It was supported by several other local organizations.
The initially peaceful rally later turned violent and damaged several vehicles, including a police car. Several people were injured in different measures in the day's violence.
A meeting was conducted today to discuss the events. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma was also present for the event. According to reports, a major upgradation of the rules and regulations regarding meetings and rallies in the state were discussed.
Three cases were registered sou-moto by the Meghalaya Police regarding the incidents of that day. One person has also been arrested in this regard.
The event has received a lot of negative feedback from different circles and has the potential to cause harm to the tourism sector. Meghalaya Tourism Development Forum (MTDF) issued a statement on Sunday. They urged the state government to take "immediate action and apprehend the perpetrators" of the events that took place in Shillong.
Meghalaya is currently under a multi party coalition government headed by the National People's Party. The government has not been able to achieve the number of jobs promised , nor have they been successful in making reservations for the local youth in jobs across the state. And the state goes to election in the next month.
The organizers have already apologized for the incidents of the day. But several circles are blaming both the organizers as well as the state government for serious lapses in safety measures.
Two members of FKJGP were summoned by the state police on Tuesday morning and they showed total cooperation in the matter.
