Meghalaya: Thief Caught & Beaten Up By Locals Mercilessly at Nongstoin, Video Goes Viral

SHILLONG: In a shocking incident, a youth was mercilessly thrashed by a group of local residents for allegedly trying to steal a music system from a vehicle at Nongstoin in Meghalaya's West Khasi Hills district.

Further, in a video that when viral on social media, a man could be seen beating up the youth with a wooden object.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya police officials said a case has been registered against the mob at the Nongstoin police station.

"The act of taking the law into their own hands by the public has led to a criminal case being registered against those individuals involved in wrongfully confining and assaulting the accused person under Nongstoin PS," AIGP G K Iangrai said in a statement on Sunday.

On the 02nd August, 2021 information was received at Nongstoin Police Station to the effect that local people along with the VDP had detained a person who was attempting to steal a stereo system from a vehicle parked inside DTO's office, Nongstoin. The police officials then immediately proceeded to the place of occurrence and apprehended the person.

Subsequently, a criminal case was also registered under Nongstoin PS against the accused person.

However, prior to the police team reaching the spot, a video of the accused person being assaulted by the local people was recorded and the same was also circulated throughout social media. The act of taking the law into their own hands by the public has led to a criminal case being registered against those individuals involved in wrongfully confining and assaulting the accused person under Nongstoin PS.

The investigations of both cases are in progress and as per the medical opinion; the accused person had sustained minor injuries.
