SHILLONG: The capital city of Meghalaya suffers from massive traffic congestion throughout the year and the Director General of Police for the state has mentioned that modern technology will be put to use to ensure that the traffic situation can be eased. DGP LR Bishnoi made this announcement on Tuesday.

The city traffic is currently handled by the traffic police personnel who control a total of 56 major and minor road junctions across the city with the aim of preventing congestion. The police chief mentioned that the chief minister of the state has ordered all concerned departments to take the necessary steps towards the decongestion of the road in the city. He also suggested that drones should be used to monitor as well as manage the traffic situation in the state capital.

The DGP added, “Today, I am sending a team of traffic officers to the secretariat to try and understand how drones can be used to monitor traffic congestion in certain areas. Training is required and once the officers are through with it, we will start using drones. First, we will procure the drones as per our needs and a proposal is under consideration.”

The whole project is a part of the court-monitored process of decongesting the city. The state government had also prepared to blueprint towards the same goal, which they had submitted to the Meghalaya High Court last year. It was broadly based on the augmentation of network capacity, improvement in public transport, and reduction in the need for travelling.

The blueprint also has options for the introduction of bus corridors and the setting up of alternative modes of public transportation. Plans are also in place for road network expansion and the creation of new routes to bypass the city. The even-odd system was also implemented for taxis towards the same end.
