Guwahati: After a consultative meeting held on September 2, the Government of Meghalaya has decided to conduct the University Grants Commission (UGC) examinations from October 7 to 16. The examinations have been delayed due to an outbreak of the novel coronavirus across the country.

While the undergraduate examinations shall be conducted both online and offline, the postgraduate examinations shall be conducted exclusively via the online mode, the state's Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma informed via a tweet in the evening hours of September 2.

The Meghalaya Chief Minister also wrote that the checking of the answer sheets shall be conducted expeditiously and the results shall be declared by the 31st of October.

"Government has decided to conduct UGC examinations from 7th to 16th Oct, 2020. UG exams to be conducted both online & offline and online option specifically for PG. Students stationed outside #Meghalaya to appear exams online. Results will be declared by 31st Oct, 2020," Sangma wrote in his tweet announcing the move.

It is to be noted that the UGC had issued a notification on 6 July, mandating universities to conduct the delayed final-year exams by September-end.

Some states had contested the notification, citing concerns over the raging pandemic. The Maharashtra government, for instance, informed the Supreme Court that its State Disaster Management Authority had on 13 July decided not to conduct exams amid the COVID-19 crisis in the state.

Upholding the University Grants Commission (UGC) notification mandating universities to conduct final-year exams by September-end, the Supreme Court on August 28 said states and union territories cannot promote students without conducting exams as directed by the UGC.
