SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) observed the 125th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose at the State Central Library campus here on January 23. The programme started with the singing of 'VandeMataram'. After that, flowers were placed at the statue of Netaji; and the programme concluded with singing of the National Anthem.
Reflecting on the glorious life of Netaji, MPCC working president James S. Lyngdoh said that he was elected as the 55th president of INC (Indian National Congress) in 1938. He formed a National Planning Committee, which formulated a policy of broad industrialization. During his visit to Shillong he stayed at the Ashley Hall bungalow near the Earl Sanatorium. He also visited the Congress office located at Umsohsun behind M/s Mahari& Son's besides addressing several meetings in Shillong. Apart from participating in the Satyagraha in the country led by Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji fought a full-fledged battle against the British from exile during World War-II.
He had also freed the Andaman & Nicobar Islands from the British, and conquered up to the Manipur border which was the first "freedom" India had got. Among those attending the programme were the general secretaries of MPCC, DrManash Das Gupta, K. Lyngkhoi and Sanjay Das, besides, general secretary Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress Fernandez S. Dkhar, MPCC joint secretary KamolMarbaniang and other party functionaries and members, stated a release.
