Shillong: Former Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has been recognized as the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
Sangma is also the All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) legislative party leader.
"In continuation to a notification dated 14 March 2018, the speaker is pleased to recognize Mukul Sangma has as the Leader of Opposition in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly," a notification by the Commissioner and Secretary of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly said.
Notably, the Sangma was the Chief Minister of Meghalaya from 2010 to 2018.
In last year, December, he was elected as the party's parliamentary leader in the Meghalaya Assembly, and while addressing media, he had said that their decision (to merge with the TMC) will be a trendsetter across the northeast and the country.
"The pattern will follow in several other States. We are only responding to the collective desire of the people and for the interest of this great nation," Dr Sangma had said.
He had also said that they decided to join the TMC based on the palpable feeling of thousands of Congress workers across the state of Meghalaya, the Northeast, and in the country as well.
