Shillong: The NEHU Teachers Association (NEHUTA) on Wednesday condemned the baton charge and lodging of complaints of rioting and destruction of public property by students of JNU.
Issuing a statement on Wednesday, NEHUTA president Xavier Mao stated: “The students and teachers of JNU have been raising the issue of wastage of public funds granted to JNU on unacademic activities without following due process of consultation with elected representatives of teachers’ and students. Seemingly this is the style of high handed functioning adopted generally in almost all the central universities by incumbent the Vice-Chancellors. The NEHUTA condemns such high-handed acts of the Vice-Chancellors for usurping role of academic council, executive council, court and other statutory bodies.
The issue raised by students involves protection of right of higher education of the poor and the marginalized sections, which cannot be thrown open to corporate, business and traders, as that will completely degrade quality of higher education and make it further lowering of standards, NEHUTA said.
