SHILLONG : As a protest against the CAA, North East Students Organisation has announced 'Black Day' on 11th of December 2022. This is due to approval of the Citizenship Amendment Act by Rajya Sabha on 11th December 2019.

The passing of the Act was a green signal for all the non-Muslims migrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh to acquire Indian citizenship.

Samuel Jyrwa, the chairman of NESO stated that, 11th December will always be observed as a 'Black Day' in Northeast.

The organisation has decided to put up black flags and black banners across the chief spots in the entire NE region on the day. The prime objective behind this action is to make the government realise that the organisation is completely against CAA. Jyrwa considers this action of the higher authority as a stringent law and appeals everyone to unite against it.

He is of the view that, this is an complete injustice towards the natives of northeast state. The government of India totally neglected the demands of the indigenous people of the state that stood against the Citizenship Amendment Act. Despite continuous effort by the public, the authority passed the bill in Parliament, stated Samuel Jyrwa.

The people across the region are concerned about the harmful impact of this action by the government. In 2019, there were humongous protests that shook Northeast after the passing of the bill. However, the Act is yet to be winded up due to lack of set rules. The Citizenship Amendment Act Was criticised on a global level.

It provided a pathway to Indian citizenship for oppressed religious minorities of Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan who are Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Parsis or Jains. However, the law does not provide citizenship to the Muslims from these countries.

The amendment was slammed on the basis of discrimination on the grounds of religion, specially for excluding the Muslims. Assam and the northeast states witnessed a lot of violation during 2019 December, as the people were afraid of losing their political rights, culture and land rights by giving citizenship to refugees.
