SHILLONG: Passengers in buses and taxis plying between Shillong and its suburbs are openly violating the anti-COVID protocols. Nor do the conductors make the passengers follow the social-distancing and face mask mandatory norms in the State-leased buses running under the 'Shillong Transport Public Service' (STPS). A driver said that he can't help it when passengers force themselves into the bus. Several passengers also said that they have no other alternatives than to barge in and travel in the limited number of buses.
Similarly, cabs plying outside the city ferry passengers by also negating the Standard Operating Protocols (SOPs) laid down by the district administration. However within the city, most of the cabs ply following the norms. The maximum number of six to seven passengers are allowed in each taxi.
Moreover, face masks are virtually absent beyond the city limits, so is social distancing during important gatherings like funerals. No protocol is in place in spite of the fact that Durbar Shnongs are trying to make the masses aware of this vital issue.
