SHILLONG: North Garo Hills police had to resort to blank firing to disperse a mob on Saturday night. There was no injury reported to both the police and the public during the incident at Tapadarengchi Operation Group Centre. Additional force and SF-10 commandos have been immediately deployed in the area and situation is under close observation.
In this connection two persons have been arrested and two cases have been registered under relevant sections of law.
According to police, on the Saturday evening, the officer in-charge of Tapadarengchi Operation Group Centre received information that some villagers had apprehended a person and suspecting him to be a dacoit or a kidnapper, the mob was assaulting him at Tapa Bazaar.
Immediately officials rushed to the area, and rescued the person who was assaulted and took him to Resubelpara CHC (Community Health Centre) for immediate medical attention.
Soon, rumour about the incident started to spread, and several hundreds of people from the neighbouring villages appeared at Tapadarengchi Operation Group Centre at around 9:30 pm.
''The crowd demanded that the suspected person be shown and handed over to them and the agitated mob started breaking the fence and destroying the properties at the compound of the Tapadarengchi Operation Group Centre,'' said Assistant Inspector General of Police, Gabriel Ïangrai.
