SHILLONG: Amidst the election process in the state of Meghalaya and the run to conduct a new government, the Centre transferred Phagu Chauhan, the governor of Bihar to the hill state. The announcement was made on 12th of January, Sunday.

The reshuffle has occurred as a result of President Draupadi Murmu’s decision to shuffle governors of several states. Phagu Chauhan is currently 75 years old and have outshined all in the Ghosi assembly seat in Uttar Pradesh for six times in a row. The politician represented several political parties including Lok Dal, Bahujan Samaj Party and Bharatiya Janata Party.

Apart from this, Chauhan received ample amount of criticisms because of degrading health of universities and corruption charges against vice chancellors. However, the politician managed to offer his presence for the longest phase in Raj Bhawan in recent years.

Phagu Chauhan has been replaced by Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar. Arlekar is currently 68 years old and was the former Speaker of Goa legislative assembly and the forest and environment minister of Goa. He was appointed as the Governor of Himachal Pradesh in 2021 July. Arlekar expressed his gratitude towards the Union government for offering him such a valuable responsibility.

When asked about being appointed as a Governor in a state where the government is not led by a BJP leader, Arlekar claimed that it would not make any difference which party the state belongs to, because a government is a government. Arlekar is credited with making Goa legislative assembly paperless, the first state assembly to do so.

Phagu Chauhan has been appointed in place of Brig. (retd) BD Mishra, the governor of Arunachal Pradesh, and who was taking up the additional charge of Meghalaya. Notably, Mishra has now acquired the position of Lt. Governor of Ladakh. As Satya Pal Malik’s tenure got over in 2022, ever since then, the post of a full time Governor in Meghalaya was lying ideal.
