Shillong: On Wednesday SPARK organized a pre-Christmas celebration for the under-privileged children and the elderly at the Mercy Old Age Home, in the city. The celebration provided underprivileged kids a platform to enjoy the festival to the fullest as most of these children are debarred of their precious childhood and fun-filled life because they have to work to support themselves and their families.
This special programme was also organized to spread happiness among the elderly people there and provide them too with a platform to enjoy together with the children thereby making an effort to lessen their crave for their dear ones at least for the day and make the celebration full of happiness for everyone.
The chief guest for the programme was T. Dkhar, Commissioner and Secretary, Social Welfare Department, Meghalaya. Dkhar interacted with the children and the elderly alike and wished everyone Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
He also showed his concern on different social issues where children are falling victims to and making a commitment to address the same and also showed his kind concern over the hardships the elderly people had to go through being left alone by their own children and their dear ones.
Special Guest, Meena Kharkongor, Chairperson, State Commission for Protection of Child Rights while addressing the participants encouraged them to move ahead in life and asked them not to lose hope because of difficulties that comes in life. She also assured to extend her valuable support to them as and when required.
