SHILLONG: PT Sawkmie, the Chief Whip of Opposition in Meghalaya, has sought the intervention of State Governor Satya Pal Malik into the current imbroglio in the North Eastern Hill University (NEHU).

"I urge you to intervene (into) the present situation so that the functioning of the University will come back to normal," Sawkmie said in a letter to the Governor, who is also Chancellor of the varsity.

He said that it is unfortunate that the Joint Action Committee (JAC) comprising the NEHUTA, NEHUNTA and the NEHUSU came out to the streets and spoke against the failure of the incumbent Vice Chancellor (VC).

It may be mentioned that the JAC, on Tuesday, staged a protest demanding that the Centre must not grant extension to Prof SK Srivastava as the Vice Chancellor of NEHU.

Prof Srivastava's tenure will end on September 23, 2020.

The JAC has also made several allegations against the incumbent VC and his style of functioning.
