SHILLONG: An Right to Information (RTI) activist from the state of Meghalaya criticised CM Conrad K Sangma along with Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, for manipulating the general public in connection with funds sanctioned by the Centre for Covid-19 deaths.

According to the activist, Tynsong inquired on the matter that why he instead of registering an RTI application in the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, took information regarding the pandemic expenses from the state administration. The activist on the other hand claims that, the Department of Revenue and Disaster Management was kind enough to attend his questions in connection with Covid-19 deaths.

Rani is of the view that, as per section 6(3) of the RTI act of 2005, the Public Information Officer (PIO) should make the applicant aware and transfer the application to the concerned authorities that acquires the needed information.

The process should conclude within a period of five days from the date of receiving it. On 9th of February, a candidate for VPP from North Shillong, named Adelbert Nongrum registered a complaint in the Sadar police unit and appealed investigation regarding the Rs 43 crore that Rani said was missing from the Rs 119 crore that was sanctioned by the National Health Mission for matters related to Covid-19.

According to Nongrum, the funds are being abused. In the mean time, Rani criticised the CM for his statement that he did not receive any sort of letter from the authority which implied that the NPP needs to obtain an NOC from the office of the Deputy Commissioner before going ahead with the construction of party office.

The activist asserts that it is completely unacceptable that the DCM is questioning his action in relation to RTI findings. He further stated that, if this is the matter, the government will also be questioned in matters related to Them Metor, smart meters and so on.
