SHILLONG: The crematorium of the Meghalaya Urban Development Authority at Jhalupara, managed and operated by the Greater Shillong Crematorium & Mortuary Society (GSC&MS) will be kept in operation and ready, as and when necessary, for the cremation of COVID-19 victims and shall also be used for incineration of bio-medical wastes.

The unanimous decisions were taken after threadbare deliberations in a meeting held by Minister of Urban Affairs Hamletson Dohling with members of the Greater Shillong Crematorium & Mortuary Society recently. The meeting was convened in view of the unfortunate events that ensued after the first COVID-19 death in Meghalaya.

The meeting also decided that the crematorium staff will have to be sensitized on the protocols pertaining to disposal of dead bodies of COVID-19 victims as well as other protocols relating to COVID-19. Besides, Personal Protection Equipments (PPEs) will be made available to the crematorium staff and operators. Practical training on the use of PPEs will be imparted to them jointly by the Shillong Municipal Board and the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board.

The meeting also resolved that the crematorium and its adjoining areas will be sanitised before and after every operation.
