SHILLONG: The East Khasi Hills police have beefed up the security across Shillong city ahead of the Independence Day celebration.
This could be seen as police patrolling in the capital city has been increased and checking of vehicles especially during night time has also been beefed up.
Speaking to reporters, here on Monday, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Claudia Lyngwa said, “We have made elaborate security arrangements to thwart any attempt to disrupt the celebrations.”
Adequate amount of security has been deployed at the main venue of the Independence Day function in Polo Ground where the celebration is to be held on August 15.
When asked, if there is any threat to the celebration from militant outfit, she said, “ As of right now there is no such threat but the police in Meghalaya is always on alert and we are well prepared hence its always better to be safe than sorry.”
She also informed that police have also increased patrolling across the city. The security forces have been directed to remain vigilant and intensify checking.
“We are ready to tackle any kind of situation,” the East Khasi Hills police chief said.
Lyngwa said informed that even traffic personnel are working extra shifts till 12 to 12 30 am in the morning.
“We also have an additional team which will keep an eye on the security of the celebration in the city but more details about this team I cannot disclose but they are already working and carrying out their duty across the district,” she said adding that the idea of the security arrangements in the city is to make the general public feel safe during the Independence Day celebration.
The SP of East Khasi Hills also informed that they have also made adequate security arrangements for the other programmes which will be held as part of the Independence Day celebrations.
