SHILLONG: As the day of voting comes closer, discrepancies are also being reported regarding the polling process in the state of Meghalaya.

One of the problems that came to light was the reported violations of the Model Code of Conduct in the state of Meghalaya. One of the members of the previous Meghalaya Legislative Assembly was reportedly handing out cash to the voters of his constituency.

A social organisation had lodged a complaint with the authorities regarding this problem. It had mentioned that the minister of the previous Meghalaya state assembly was seen handing over cash to a lady of the constituency.

Taking note of the complaint, the returning officer for the Mawthadraishan assembly constituency which is located in the Eastern West Khasi Hills District of the state sent a notice to the candidate. The election commission has served a show-cause notice to the candidate for doling out money under the cover of a rural development program for the people of his constituency.

Brolding Nongsiej was the elected representative for the Mawthadraishan assembly constituency in the 2018 assembly polls in Meghalaya. He had the portfolio of the Water Resoruces and the Home Guards and Civil Defence Departments for the Meghalaya government during the tenure of Conrad K Sagma as the chief minister.

He is also a member of the United Democratic Party of the state and has been given time till February 25 to send a reply for the show cause notice.

Today the prime minister of India also took part in two election-related events in Meghalaya. He took part in a roadshow in Shillong and an election rally in Tura on Friday. He had expressed confidence in the Bhartiya Janata Party’s win in the upcoming assembly polls which are dated to take place on next Monday and counting dated for March 2.
