Shillong: The State-level launch of the special summary revision of photo electoral rolls was held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office here on Monday. The function was attended by the Chief Electoral Officer, Meghalaya, FR Kharkongor as the chief guest and District Election Officer, East Khasi Hills, M War Nongbri as the guest of honour.
Kharkongor said that EPIC is an undeniable proof that a person is a genuine citizen of the State. He called upon political parties to impress upon the public to get them enrolled in the electoral rolls. Further, he urged upon political parties to appoint booth level agents (BLA) in facilitating enrolment of new voters and help them in filing claims and objections so that the people of the State are not denied the right to vote.
He said that Meghalaya has 19,09,686 electorates with projected electorates of 19,72,582 in 2020. He said that the majority of the 62,896 people who are yet to get enrolled are those between 18 and 19 years of age, adding that through the special summary revision, we can get them enrolled in the electoral rolls.
Stating that EPIC is one of the most important documents for the people of the State, Nongbri said that the summary revision of photo electoral rolls is an exercise to ensure that genuine citizens are not left behind. She said that the aim of the summary revision is to ensure that new voters who have attained the age of 18 plus as on 1.1.2020 are enrolled in the photo electoral rolls. The special summary revision is also to ensure accuracy and completeness of photo electoral rolls and correcting entry in the rolls and also to improve the quality and accuracy of e-Rolls.
The CEO and DEO also distributed CDs containing draft electoral rolls to representatives of different political parties.
